1 Read B&B (part one, chapter 3) on critical reading. Key terms: persuasion, argument; reason vs. rationalization; assumption, premise, syllogism; satire, irony, sarcasm, humor.
2 Choose a current political cartoon (attach). Write a one-page (250 words) critical commentary based on current events (facts) and your comments (opinion). Review political cartoon section (part one, ch 4 on visual rhetoric).
5 Prepare for in-class essay next week Thursday, Sept 14th on The True Meaning of Pictures. Open book: Shelby Adams handout, class notes, visual rhetoric reading; review terms such as point of view (POV), logos/reason, pathos/emotion.
Week 1
Due Tues, Sept 5th
1 Read Barnet & Bedau*, Ch 4 (pp 141-176) on visual rhetoric.
2 Find an example of documentary photography—a record of an event, capture of an everyday scene or access to something normally hidden from view (usually part of a series or long-term study). Notable documentary photographers include Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Nan Goldin, Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier. Also, Eugene Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Sebastian Salgado.
3 Write a one-paragraph commentary on the photo (include photo—online or photocopied image). Cite source. Briefly establish time, place, basic facts, then proceed with your commentary. Title + photo + paragraph. Avoid summarizing or describing—explain or analyze.
Helpful hint: see ch 4 (170-176) analysis of Boston fire photos, on photojournalism, a subcategory of documentary photography. Use critical thinking terms from the reading, such as logos/reason and pathos/emotion.
4 In-class viewing of The True Meaning of Pictures—on Shelby Adams, documentary photographer.
5 Bring Barnet & Bedau + index cards to class.
